Jovelle Balani is a Filipino singer-songwriter noted for her sultry, contralto voice. She draws her influences from artists such as Norah Jones, Adele, Sara Bareilles, Nat King Cole, to name a few. She is currently under Marky Hugh Productions, a talent agency based in Toronto.
On her debut single “Ode to a Lover,” Winnipeg artist fuses modern pop and jazz to create a relaxed, sitting-in-a-candlelit-jazz-bar soundscape. Jovelle aspires to bring back this kind of music for the younger generations to appreciate. She shares, “jazz music is often associated with something ‘old school’, but it is a timeless genre.”
Jovelle also wants to prove that singing is not only for belters. “While ‘birit’ singing has become popular in the Filipino culture, I hope it is a standard I wish to break through. Low notes are equally important too. After all, singing is all about storytelling and artistic delivery.”
In 2022, Jovelle Balani will be representing Canada at the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) for the second time around. Dubbed as the “World Talent Olympics” participated by talents from over 60 countries, she will be competing in the Vocal Category. The live event will be held in Anaheim, California.
“Ode to a Lover” is available on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and other digital music platforms!
