Promise and Promiscuity

Britney Spears and Bon Jovi in a Jane Austen adaptation?

Promise and Promiscuity: A New Musical by Jane Austen and Penny Ashton is a funny and engaging one-woman show by Penny Ashton (and Jane Austen).

This show is a mash-up of regency and modern culture. Ashton’s character Miss Elspeth Slowtree wears bonnets, attends balls, and minds her manners while the other characters quote Britney Spears’ ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ and Bon Jovi’s ‘Shot Through the Heart’.

The music, written and arranged by Robbie Ellis, was beautiful. It featured Beethoven, Strauss, ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’, Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’, and a couple of clubbing songs.

The characters were mostly based from Pride and Prejudice, it was easy for me to identify the characters from Austen’s novels because I’ve read her works.

Cheeky, ironic, and witty, this show is entertaining for everyone—whether you’re familiar with Jane Austen or not.
