Venue: 25 - The VAULT
The title is exactly what the show is. It’s the classic tale of Hamlet with an urban hip hop spin.
From the moment you step into the venue you transported to the dark grafitti filled streets of what is to be Denmark. There you see all of the players break dancing, singing along to various hip hop hits from the 90’s to today. The players are in menacing black and white makeup and set the tone for a very interesting and amp’d up night!
The story unfolds exactly how Hamlet is told using incredible and well conceived imagery displayed by the actors to a pre-recorded hip hop soundtrack. If you’re having problems catching all of the clever lyrics and punchlines- they have you covered with all the lyrics being projected above.
The best moments in the show were when the actors delivered their lines of dialogue which unfortunately happened very seldomly. I do wish that a few more songs could have been rapped live but it is what is and I was still thoroughly entertained.
I’m not sure if I’m allowed to do this but…. 4.5 out of 5 lumpia!!!
