Orion Remoquillo, a Grade 12 student at Garden City Collegiate in Winnipeg, has recently been honored with the prestigious Terry Fox Humanitarian Award and a scholarship worth up to $28,000.
The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program was established in 1982 in honor of Terry Fox, one of Canada’s most beloved heroes. The award is given to young Canadians who have overcome adversity in their lives to make positive impacts in their communities.
Amongst 15 students across Canada, Remoquillo stands out as the sole recipient from Winnipeg, a testament to his exceptional dedication to serving others.
The Terry Fox Award acknowledges Remoquillo’s extensive volunteer work, totaling more than 600 hours. His commitment to assisting younger children with special needs and his involvement with the Special Olympics has been recognized. But for Remoquillo, working with these children is not extraordinary; it is a part of his life. Growing up with a brother who has Fragile X syndrome, he has gained valuable experience and a deep sense of fulfillment from supporting individuals with special needs.
Remoquillo’s exceptional work ethic is evident in every endeavor he undertakes. He has made significant strides during his high school years, and the scholarship serves as tangible proof of his accomplishments. As a member of the Garden City Gophers varsity boys basketball team, he was awarded the Lana Wenke Courage Award by Basketball Manitoba this year.
Living with Tourette’s syndrome, ADHD, and OCD, Remoquillo views these conditions not as disabilities but as challenges he has learned to navigate throughout his life. Despite the hurdles he has faced, his confidence has flourished in recent years. He attributes this growth to adopting a different perspective, cultivating mindfulness, and avoiding distractions and overwhelm.
Known for his confidence and approachable nature, Remoquillo has become a recognizable figure within his school community. As he walks through the hallways, a small camera with a microphone in hand, he documents his life’s journey—a journey that has been steadily ascending in recent times.
Remoquillo hosts a podcast called “Danny’s Digital Show.” Through this platform, he shares his experiences, aiming to inspire others just as he has been inspired by those around him. He believes in the power of authenticity and encourages individuals to embrace their true selves.
Remoquillo often finds inspiration in a quote from Garden City Collegiate alumnus and basketball player Jared Ogungbemi-Jackson: “Stay true, be great.” Since their meeting in Grade 8, these words have resonated with Remoquillo, reminding him to stay true to himself and strive for greatness in all aspects of life.
After graduation, Remoquillo plans to pursue a degree in physical education at the University of Winnipeg. He envisions a future where he can continue making a positive impact on others and inspiring change through his compassionate actions.
Orion Remoquillo’s story serves as a testament to the transformative power of perseverance, compassion, and authenticity. His unwavering dedication to helping others and his ability to overcome personal challenges make him a true role model, not just within his school community but also across the nation. With his boundless determination and uplifting spirit, Remoquillo is poised to leave an indelible mark on the world, one act of kindness at a time.
