Celebrating Filipino Heritage Month

Students from Winnipeg School Division’s Filipino Bilingual Program at Meadows West School performed during the flag-raising ceremonies hosted by the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba (PHCM). June is Filipino Heritage Month and the PHCM along with several Filipino-Canadian associations and groups will host events and celebrations all month long. On June 12, Filipino communities across Canada and around the world will also celebrate the 126th anniversary of Philippine independence. Photo by Ron Cantiveros | Filipino Journal

Filipino Heritage Month Kicks Off at Manitoba Legislature

The Manitoba Legislative Building was alive with excitement as the Filipino community gathered to celebrate the kickoff of Filipino Heritage Month. Despite the weather, the indoor flag raising ceremony set the tone with a land acknowledgment by Taylor Wilson and national anthems by Mervin Sison.

Musica Singers delighted the audience with their vocal talents, followed by a heartfelt poetry recital from a Brandon Community member and an energetic performance of “Ma-Buhay! The Musical.” Premier Wab Kinew’s speech highlighted the community’s contributions, and a surprise performance by students from Meadows West Filipino Heritage Language program added a special touch.

Post-program, attendees enjoyed a “salo salo” serenade by Jovelle Balani & Co. and delicious Filipino cuisine, alongside an art showcase by local Filipinx artists. The celebration set the stage for a month filled with pride, culture, and community spirit.
