The path to Rio Olympics is undeniably tough with powerhouse teams- France, Canada and New Zealand on the hunt.
The Road may be tough but Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V. Pangilinan has high hopes for the national team, Gilas Pilipinas.
Gilas is on the works in forming the best possible team as they prepare for the Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournament on July 5-10 on our own turf.
Philippines will be facing the toughest teams in the group (B). PH will kick off its bid against France on July 5 and will face New Zealand the next day. Group A includes Canada and Turkey. Only one team will make it to the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
“Of course (the expectation is), no less than the opportunity to participate in Rio. I’d like to see Filipino players, Filipino athletes belong to the Olympic movement again, not only in basketball but in other sports,” Pangilinan said Saturday night.
“We need Filipino fans to come out there fully and support the team. I think it will be a big boost to the team’s effort,” he said.
