Have You Been Doing Your Homework?

(On Diligence, Credibility, and Professional Responsibility)

“Life is a continuous learning and unlearning process.”

A Sense of Professional Responsibility
If you are a lawyer, I expect you to be very knowledgeable of the laws of the country where you live, especially the particular area of legal practice you are specializing in as well as the latest amendments to such laws.

If you’re a doctor or a nurse, you should be knowledgeable of and updated with at least the basic medical or nursing routines and procedures, respectively.
If you are a writer, you should know how to write a complete sentence and when to end it with a period or when with a question mark.

If you are a community leader, you should be aware of the happenings in the community, like the various cultural events, for instance; and you should be a regular reader of community newspapers to know the issues and current updates.

It’s frustrating to observe how many so-called professionals and leaders fail miserably in doing their tasks and responsibilities because they don’t do their homework diligently. They often succumb to laziness, stagnancy, indifference, and ignorance, and usually arrogantly proclaim that what they learned back in school was enough to get them by. They lack a sense of professionalism and a strong sense of leadership—the very essence of what they are trying to be.

Or, in Simple Words
Knowledge, expertise, and willingness to improve and become better will always be the basic foundation of whatever you are doing or trying to be. The diligence in making this possible by continuous learning is where credibility originates. And this is a responsibility of every professional or leader.
