Getting Active at the Manitoba Outdoors Show

Getting Active at the Manitoba Outdoors Show

The annual Manitoba Outdoors Show took place on February 8, 9, and 10 at Red River Ex Place in Winnipeg. The large consumer trade show focusses on getting people and families active in the outdoors. Everything from hang gliding to archery and fishing to scuba diving was featured at the show. My favourite activity there every year is the LumberJax axe throwing booth. It looks incredibly dangerous but chucking axes at a target is actually quite surprisingly satisfying. I watched as kids as young as seven years old were throwing blades in the caged lanes.

I had the opportunity to once again be a stage presenter at the event. My area of expertise of course is fishing, but I changed it up slightly this year with relatively off the wall topics such as ‘How to Win an Ice Fishing Derby’ and ’10 Ways to Make Kids Hate the Outdoors’. If you didn’t get a chance to see my seminars in person, I will have written article versions of them posted soon on my website Kickerfish.ca.

Local cat fishing legend Todd Longley hosted his version of The Price is Right on the Saturday to a huge audience.

Contestants were called to the stage by random draw and competed to guess the price of various prize packages. The final grand prize was an Alumacraft 14ft Jon Boat which was won by Filipino Anglers Association of Manitoba executive member Robert Donato. He guessed the price to be $1200 as did another contestant which ended up being over by only $1. The two finalists then competed in a game of ‘heads or tails’ for the boat which Robert won.

The next big trade show is the upcoming Mid-Canada Boat Show at the Convention Centre on February 28 – March 3. I will be there competing at the Alumacraft Celebrity Cook-Off each day of the event so please come down to cheer me on.

I will also be helping at the Enns Brothers booth if anyone out there is in the market for a new boat. Be sure to find me as I can most likely help with getting you the best deal possible. Even if you are not in the market, the annual boat show is always an interesting place to walk around and explore. The Hook and Bullet section of the show has dozens of booths from Humminbird Electronics to Lake of the Woods Sports Headquarters tackle store to check out as well.
