Celebrating inclusivity, reconciliation and humanity
The 5th anniversary of the Ethnocultural Council of Manitoba Stronger Together Inc. held December 8 at the Marlborough Inn was a colourful showcase of collaborated effort of the participants for cultural sharing.
“It is our 5th anniversary to coincide with the human rights days. And we wanted to showcase the tremendous talents and accomplishments of immigrants and refugees to dispel negativism prevailing in our society today, ” said Perla Javate, a co-chairperson of the council.
Renowned Clayton Sandy. Knowledge Keeper started the program followed by the remarks of ECCM co-chairs Perla Javate & Shakila Atayee.
The start of the program was a respectable rendition of “Dahil Sa Iyo” by IACH Performances led by Jeanette, Chioma, Alejandra, and Chizoba and followed by a solo dance by Godson and Toma La Mano de Dios by Alejandra. Other performances include the Iranian Braxa Group led by Zohren, Mehraveh, and Samira, Oji M Emem Song by Chioma, Godson, and Jeanette; Poetry by Issy Hawamda, Magellan Song by Jeanette, Afghan Dance by Taban, and Ahaya Song by Chizoba, Jeanette, and Alejandra, and the final performance was rendered by Yazidi performers – Hadji Hesso.
There was a community laptop handout by Reuben Garang of Immigration Partnership Winnipeg.
MP Terry Duguid, Andrew Smith, Minister of Sports, Culture and Heritage, and City Councillor Janice Lukes graced the event and delivered their greetings. Jamie Moses, MLA St. Vital, was the keynote speaker. Closing remarks by ECCM Project Manager Kathleen Vyrauen. The event was emceed by Mahdi Sultani.
