Warmth in Winterpeg

Warmth in Winterpeg

by Roselyn Advincula

It’s winter time again here in Winnipeg yet, the Filipino Women’s Initiative group keeps on sharing the warmth of community spirit to our kababayan through their free programming.

Women are having fun, sharing laughter, getting to know one another and sweating together in the Hans Kai (group health management from Japan) and Belly Dancing program in partnership with Norwest Co-op Community Health and Healthy Together Now – Inkster.

Moving to the West end area, the group offers Strengthening families, domestic violence prevention and Zumba program. The group shares their experiences, and views about impacts of moving to a new country, family dynamics, relationships and others through a facilitated discussion by a community social worker. This is in partnership with Mount Carmel Clinic.

This December 13, 2014, the group hosted a potluck holiday gathering for the community. The day was filled with food, games, gifts and joy. Everyone excitedly participated in games, cooking and socializing. Everyone shared kind words about their experiences that afternoon. One of the kids said, “this is the best day of my life.”

Also, Santa made a special appearance in our event, too.

So, if you want to do something fun this season or meet new friends, please connect with us and we will be happy to welcome you. We strive to provide free quality programs for families here in Winnipeg!

Our core volunteer group members are Abigail Legaspi, Jacqueline Manuel, Malou Josue, Maricelle Banay and Roselyn Advincula. Special thanks to Michelle Kirkbride and Kristina McMillan of Norwest Co-op for your continuous support to the newcomer community.
