Southeast Manitoba Filipino Association celebrates family Christmas

More community plans for 2014…

The events in 2013 defined the community involvement of the Southeast Manitoba Filipino Association especially the fund raising efforts for the Haiyan typhoon victims when the association raised more than $1,200 and sent 40 boxes of groceries, toys, used clothes for men, women and children thru UMAC Cargo Express. Furthermore, the association has a very successful basketball tournaments when Solomon Furniture team was the champion.

“We want to involve the members of the Filipino community in Steinbach and neighobring cities in the civic and community affairs,” said Cesar Valdez, president of SEMFA.”Filipinos are growing in this city and we have to be a part of the community growth, we cannot be isolated from the mainstream.”

Last December family Christmas party was attended by many Filipino families and their Canadian friends especially Kelvin Goertzen, member of the Manitoba legislative assembly; and Ted Falk, the newly elected member of the Parliament. UMAC Express Cargo owners and managers, Gary and Aida Montierro, graced the events.

Winter activities are being planned for the Filipino community for January, like the ladies volleyball exhibitions and other indoor games.

“We have committees working on the various events for this coming spring and summer festivals. Steinbach residents have been looking forward for the Filipino participations in the 3rd week of June, Summer in the City; heritage and pioneer days cultural events,” Valdez said with genuine enthusiasm.
