WSAA with Team Manitoba at the WKC National Martial Arts Team Try Outs in Ottawa, Ontario

By Lee Angela Igne and Lourdes Lynn Igne

On the long weekend of May, we flew to Ottawa as proud representatives and fighting martial arts athletes for our Province for the WKC National Martial Arts Team Try Outs. It was a 3 day tournament; every competitor has to fight 2 rounds for all the events that we registered for. We all fought with experienced tough competitors from different provinces and territories of Canada. All divisions had more or less 25 competitors and one must finish Top 4 to become a member of Team Canada, the 5th, 6th and 7th places are also named as spares if anyone from the Top 4 competitors can’t go to the Worlds. WKC aimed to gather the strongest athletes to represent Canada at the Worlds!

From the Winnipeg Sikaran Arnis Academy, all 4 of us made it and won in our divisions and qualified to represent our Country as Team Canada at the World Karate Championships in Dublin, Ireland on October 27 to November 2, 2018 and at the PanAmerican Championships in February 2019 in Guatemala! Lee Angela Igne; 3rd in Point Sparring, 4th in Hard Style Traditional Hand Forms, 3rd in Creative Weapon Forms, Lourdes Lynn Igne; 4th in Point Sparring, 5th in Creative Weapon Forms, 7th in Hard Style Traditional Hand Forms, Sheryl-lyn Padua Policarpio; 3rd in Creative Weapon Forms, 7th in Hard Style Traditional Hand Forms and Miley Carino, 4th in Creative Weapon Forms and 5th in Hard Style Traditional Hand Forms. It was indeed a filled with adrenaline and a great experience of excellence!

We are determined to train harder for the Worlds. We are also seeking sponsorship pledges to get us to Ireland.
