Winter is here! Lace up the skates!

We were spoiled in December with some gorgeous and above seasonal weather last December. In fact, it was the 9th warmest December in Winnipeg and that didn’t stop many people from lacing up the ice skates and heading to the Forks and the newly open duck pond at Assiniboine Park.

On a sunny afternoon and evening over the holiday break, I ran into several Filipinos that have taken up ice skating as a new hobby. Rommel Figurasin and his family arrived to Winnipeg a few short months ago and this was their first family skate under the canopy at the Forks Market.

On the ice trail from the Forks Market to the Scotiabank Stage, I ran into Aira and her younger brother, Allan bother learning to skate for the second time. Also on their second time on skates, Joyce Umandap and Justin Mendoza.

The duck pond at Assiniboine Park also opened up over the holidays with expanded facilities at the new Qualico Family Centre and the park cafe. The Park Cafe is open daily from 8:00am to 4:00pm and serves breakfast and lunch.
