After the Siakol and Grin Department show at Essence Event Centre a couple of weeks ago, the Alternative Rock mode remains in the air in Winnipeg. Don’t rest your shoes and attire just yet, we still have two more concerts to go to, at least for the coming weeks: the Jeepney Tour of Sponge Cola on May 28 and the club gig of Up Dharma Down on June 10.

Formed in 1998, Sponge Cola are Yael Yuzon (vocals, guitar), Gosh Dilay (bass, vocals), Armo Armovit (lead guitar), and Ted Mark Cruz (drums). In their nearly two decades of activity, the quartet have released five studio albums, from 2004’s Palabas to 2014’s Ultrablessed, and a string of singles that included “Jeepney,” “Bitiw,” “Tambay,” “Kay Tagal Kitang Hinintay,” “Tuliro,” “Di Na Mababawi,” and “Move On.” The prime Philippine Alternative Rock band’s Jeepney Tour was brought by Vocal Arts Production. Formed in 2004, in Metro Manila, Philippines, Up Dharma Down (UDD) consists of Armi Millare (keyboards, vocals), Carlos Tañada (lead guitars, synthesizers), Ean Mayor (drums, samplers), and Paul Yap (bass, synthesizers). To date, UDD has released three studio albums: Fragmented (2006), Bipolar (2008), and Capacities (2012), spawning a string of singles that included “Hiwaga,” “Tayâ,” “Tadhana,” “Indak,” and “Sigurado.” Catch them as they touch down on June 10 at The Pyramid Cabaret (176 Fort St., Downtown Winnipeg).
