President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno as the next Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor following the death of Nestor Espenilla, Jr.
The appointment was welcomed by senators Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, and Panfilo “Ping” Lacson.
In a text message to reporters, Escudero, who chairs the Senate committee on banks, financial institutions and currencies, said Diokno’s appointment will certainly ensure the stability, continuity and predictability of the country’s fiscal policies and gains. Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, chair of the Senate ways and means, said Diokno is extremely bright and he believes he will learn how to supervise banks quickly. For his part, Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson said that while Diokno may not be the best choice for the post, his appointment as a BSP Governor is most welcome.
Diokno would be serving the remainder of Espenilla’s six-year term, which means he will serve beyond President Duterte’s term
