Canada sets its sight to a possible Rio Olympics slot by beating Senegal 58-55 in their last game to sweep Group A and advance to the semifinals of the FIBA Olympic men’s basketball qualifying tournament Wednesday.
Point guard Cory Joseph led the Canadians with 13 points, Tyler Ennis of the Milwaukee Bucks had 12 and Melvin Ejim added 11 points and eight rebounds. The 26th-ranked Raptors is being mentored by Coach Jay Triano. Canada earlier defeated Turkey 77-69 on the first day of the tournament.
Meanwhile, team Gilas Pilipinas got eliminated in front of a jampacked Mall of Asia Arena composed mostly of Filipino fans. The road to Rio came to a swift and stunning end in local soil as the Philippines lost to New Zealand, 89-90. Earlier, France beat the Philippines 93-84 in the first day of the tournament. The Kiwis advanced to the semifinal round along with France in Group B.
