Rare all-Filipino world title fight in the making

Donnie Nietes (41-1-4 with 23 KOs) and fellow Negros Occidental native Aston Palicte (24-2 with 20 KOs) will figure in a fight for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior-bantamweight crown.

The fight was ordered by the Puerto Rico-based WBO to determine a new champion in the 115-lb class. Nietes’ promoter Michael Aldeguer said the working date for the fight is July 21 with ABS-CBN supporting the fight. The proposed venues are Manila, Cebu and Bacolod City. Palicte is managed by businessman Jason Soong but is promoted by Roy Jones, whose outfit will also attempt to hold the fight on US soil. Nietes, 35, comes from Murcia while Palicte, 27, is from Bago City
