Lakas congressman rebuffs criticisms on Cha-cha

Lakas Party vice president for policy, Nueva Ecija Rep. Rodolfo Antonino has denied insinuations that the proposal to amend the Constitution is not a strategy by congressmen allied to former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to bring her back to power as president or prime minister.

Arroyo, now a member of Congress representing the second district of Pampanga, still has 70 partymates at the House. However, Antonino said the alleged plan to use Charter change to return Mrs. Arroyo to Malacañang will not prosper since 68 congressmen are already supporting President Aquino.

The President has opted to distance himself from the move to amend the Constitution although he has not expressed objection to it.

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile for his part said he would support convening the Senate and the House into a constituent assembly that could work for Charter change.
