Guys and Dolls, the All-Dentist Musical

Guys and Dolls, the All-Dentist Musical

At Prairie Theatre Exchange from May 9-12, the Manitoba Dental Association (MDA) will present the funny and romantic Broadway classic Guys and Dolls, the All-Dentist Musical. The critically acclaimed musical, which has won 5 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, will feature 18 dentists who will sing, dance and act for an audience of approximately 1600 dentists colleagues, family, friends and the general public. As well, 7 dentists are participating on the organizing committee and two dentists have provided theatrical and promotional support.

Two well-respected Filipino-Canadians are playing major roles in this all-dentist musical. Dr. Tricia Magsino Barnabé, a dentist practicing at Pearl Family Dental Care and Academy Dental Group will play the lead role, Miss Adelaide. Last year the International Professional Entertainment Network in Toronto awarded her as “Most Beautiful Filipino 2012 – for significant community service and accomplishments in dentistry and the arts”. Dr. Tom Colina, plays the role of Nicely-Nicely Johnson and is an owner dentist at Ellice Dental Group and Pearl Family Dental Care. He recently was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award.

Background. In April 2010, Dr. Tricia Magsino Barnabé, a member of the MDA Communications Committee , was given approval to spearhead a musical theatre presentation with all-dentist performers. Her goal was to create a positive image of the dentists, to do good for the community beyond the dental clinics. And her vision was that like-minded dentists would enjoy themselves as they stepped out of the dental realm to sing, dance and act onstage – all while fundraising for a worthy cause.

The first All-Dentist Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, was successful in its fundraising endeavours; PTE received a net profit of approx. $38,000. The show received great reviews from audiences and critic alike so the desire for a future all-dentist musical every few years became apparent.

Inspiration for the Upcoming Show. This year, Guys and Dolls, the All-Dentist Musical, will fundraise also for CancerCare Manitoba. It is again spearheaded by Dr. Tricia Magsino Barnabé, recently a member of the CancerCare Manitoba Board of Directors. The inspiration for the upcoming show is from the late Dr. Harvey Spiegel, who passed away from cancer in March 2012. Dr. Spiegel, a cast member from the previous all-dentist musical, was respected for his passion of the theatre and the arts. His charity of choice: CancerCare Manitoba Foundation (CCMF). Manitoba Dentists decided that the best way to honour him would be to fundraise for Head and Neck Cancer patients, who may be financially burdened due to complex restorative dental treatment resulting from cancer therapy.

Come See Guys and Dolls, the All-Dentist Musical! Rehearsals for the show are currently underway (2-3 times per week, 3-4 hours at a time), and as the show draws near the cast member can expect to be there up to 10 hours at a time. The show runs May 9 – 12, 2013 at Prairie Theatre Exchange, 3rd Floor, Portage Place Mall
