President Benigno Aquino and his sisters privately commemorated the third death anniversary of their mother, former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino by being at her gravesite at the Manila Memorial Park.
The former president died on Aug. 1, 2009, after a battle with colon cancer.
A media advisory said there will be a 5 p.m. Mass at Our Lady of Edsa Shrine in Mandaluyong City to be officiated by Most Rev. Gabriel Reyes, bishop of the diocese of Antipolo City. The Mass is open to the public.
Afterwards the president and his siblings lead the unveiling of their mother’s bust and open a mini photo exhibit at the Edsa Shrine.
In a statement posted on the Official Gazette, the office of presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda cited Cory Aquino’s contributions to the restoration of democracy through peaceful means following the fall of the Marcos dictatorship in 1986.
The statement also recognized her important role in the nation’s history as wife, mother and President, while exemplifying the virtues of faith, perseverance and integrity.
The statement further mentioned her determination to defend and nurture democratic institutions and the principles she and millions of Filipinos helped restore and rebuild.
