At the beginning, there were 34 entries; then, there were only 10 finalists; and in the late afternoon of April 6, three entries were proclaimed winners for the 1st Poster Making Contest sponsored by the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival which will be held on August 24, Saturday, at the Garden City Shopping Centre parking lot.
Edgar Bercasio, 1st Prize winner who received $1,000 cash award, has been active in creative undertaking. For the past, he won the Manila-Winnipeg painting contest; and he had illustrated the 1st series of books written by Ligaya Buenaventura and the late Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros. Currently, he has been busy doing some commissioned painting. The 2nd Prize winner was Kenneth Mercado, a grade 10 student at Maples Collegiet. He received $300 cash award. He is the son of William and Elizabeth Mercado. Melanie Mendiola Cancio, the 3rd Prize winner, received $200 cash award. The first prize cash award was donated by MP Kevin Lamouruex and the Canadian Tire, Garden City. The other cash awards were also donated by the Canadian Tire, Garden City.
The judges of the poster contests were Ted Marcelino, chairperson; Jean Guiang, Ted Bobier, Rody Capistrano, Darlyn Bautista, Erica Bracic of Garden City Shopping Centre and and Keith Nowicki, GM and Josephine Ditangan, Manager, Canadian Tire, Garden City.
The public vote and the members of the judge committee decided the winners. The winning design by Edgar Bercasio will be used as part of the promotion campaign of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival.
Many special prizes were awarded to those who voted for the posters which were on display at the Garden City Shopping Centre for the past two weeks. The program also featured some Filipino singers and talents as part of the entertainment portion.
