Great mix of fun, fitness and food for Badminton Smashers Club of Winnipeg

Badminton is huge in the Philippines and for as many new immigrants arriving in Winnipeg, it’s only a matter of time before badminton becomes another favourite indoor court sports activity for Pinoys in Winnipeg. Luckily, the Manitoba Badminton Association offers the Badminton Access Program at Wheelies Roller Rink and provides a low cost, central location to encourage the sport as a form of entertainment, social gathering and community building.

Thanks to the Badminton Access Program, Charina Corbillion started the Badminton Smashers Club of Winnipeg group on Facebook and brought together many Filipino badminton players of all ages and skills. The group now has over 80 members and growing weekly as more family, friends and kabayans find out about it. Due to the increasing popularity of the program, and probably due to the weather getting colder, more players are coming out to join the festivities on and off the badminton court.

Smasher Club member, Raki Pampolina enjoys her time at Wheelies because it’s fun to meet other players and improve her badminton skills. The members are the best as they are approachable, friendly and always wearing a smile.

New to the sport of badminton is Ellen Natividad and she’s enjoyed the fun and recreational benefits including meeting new members at Wheelie. The fun part includes the very active and engaging discussions that happen on a daily basis on the group’s active discussions on Facebook.

The Badminton Access Program will strive to give families, adults, multi-sport athletes, seniors, recreation and competitive players an opportunity to access badminton at their convenience and leisure.
