Getting healthy isn’t always about running to the gym and sipping protein shakes. Staying active, keeping healthy can also be fun and rewarding. Whether your run for fun or to get healthy, there are a multitude of events throughout the year where you can get exercise, have fun with friends and also give back to the community.
Dirty Donkey Mud Run
In it’s 3rd year, the Dirty Donkey Mud Run is a 5km outdoor adventure race where getting down and dirty is all part of the excitement. The race takes you over hay bales, mud ponds, forest trails, monkey bars and even more mud pits. Oh yes, there are obstacles too along the race which include heavy lifting, heavy pulling and heavy breathing as you scamper to the next obstacle. The challenges are fun and the reward is more mud and dirty on your body. You definitely can’t beat that combination.
Electric Donkey Run
Imagine 2000 runners in neon running through the Forks, St. Boniface and downtown. It was a 5km run (we walked) which started at the Forks and ended at the Manitoba Legislature. Along the way, the Electric Donkey runners were getting their glow on! The wave of neon lights of Electric Donkey runners were a welcome addition to the annual Manyfest activities in downtown Winnipeg.
Terry Fox Run
If you remember back in August, the Province of Manitoba proclaimed the August Civic holiday after Terry Fox. Terry Fox was a young man that set out to run his Marathon of Hope in 1908 to raise awareness for cancer. The Terry Fox Run is held around the globe and over 2000 runners made it out to the Winnipeg run at Assiboine Park. The Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $650 million for cancer research.
The Dirty Donkey Mud Run and Electric Donkey Run both support the Children’s Hospital for #WeAllGetToPlay project for the rooftop play structure. All pledges and donations from both runs go to that cause.
