The Philippine national football team, a.k.a. the Philippine Azkals will be playing against defending champions Thailand and four-time winner Singapore in Group A, which analysts considered as the “Group of Death,” in the upcoming 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup.
Also drawn into the group is Indonesia, which rejoins the competition after FIFA lifted its suspension last May. Thailand is the highest ranked country in the region, and is tied along with Singapore for winning the event a record four times. The Azkals have made it to the semi-finals in the 2010, 2012, and 2014 editions of the tournament but have yet to make it to the finals.
Group B is made up of Vietnam, Malaysia, co-host Myanmar and the winner of the Qualifying round between Brunei, Laos and Timor Leste. Only the top two teams from each group will make it to the semifinals.
The 2016 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup will be played from November 19 to December 17. The Filipinos are hoping to make it a fourth straight trip to the finals with the Philippines co-hosting the tournament.
