Winnipeg Folk Festival 44th installment

The 44th installment of the Winnipeg Folk Festival had one of the most successful turnouts this year at Bird’s Hill Park from July 6-9, with ticket sales up 30 percent from 2016. Headliner acts on the Main Stage for the four-night festival included American band The Shins, and Canadian performers City and Colour, Feist, and Barenaked Ladies. Other standout performances of the festival were Charlotte Cardin of Quebec whose smoky vocals wowed many, Foy Vance of Northern Ireland who delivered pure power and emotion that was true to the roots of folk music, and Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, & Mary fame) who brought the largest crowds to the children’s tent as he sang classics “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Puff the Magic Dragon.” Denmark-based band Jonah Blacksmith was the surprise hit of the festival with their folk-rock ballads that had the crowd stomping their feet and belting out their catchy choruses.
