Winnipeg Emperors debut at the 22nd Asian Hockey Championships in Toronto

Asian ice hockey set to grow in Manitoba

A squad of sixteen Asian hockey players from Winnipeg came together to represent our fine city in North York, Toronto, Ontario. After a year of team practices and scrimmages, the Emperors enjoyed playing 6 games over the course of three days at Canlan Ice Sports in North York. It’s quite an odd feeling walking into a 6-rink facility and know that every single hockey player on the ice is of Asian decent.

Of the 45 teams and over 600 hockey players at the 22nd Asian Hockey Championships in Toronto, the Winnipeg Emperors along a team from Ottawa. The Winnipeg Emperors made it to the Entry Level Division finals against the Zero Fighters from Toronto. After beating the team in the round robin, the Emperors were faced with a Zero Fighters goalie that stood on his head to keep the puck out of the net. Winnipeg Emperors lost the finals and are determined to return in 2012 for another tournament run.
