On ice with Winnipeg Jet’s legend, Thomas Steen
You can call it the highlight of my hockey career. Earlier this month, I was graciously invited to participate in a charity hockey game which featured NHL Alumni Thomas Steen, Perry Miller, Ray Neufeld, Ross Romaniuk, Ab McDonald, Jim Neilson and Carey Wilson. Playing on the North Winnipeg All Stars, local media celebrities included Chris Burke Gafney (Orphan/The Pumps), Jay Bodner (Eagle and Hawk), Jason Bone, Peter Chura (Global TV), Nicole Dube (Global TV), Duncan MacPhail (92 CITI FM), Peter Waldie (Actor) and acting as the game referee, Dave Wheeler (POWER 97).
Playing against the Winnipeg Police Patrolmen wasn’t an easy task. These guys can skate! It was basically playing against the Harlem Globetrotters and we were the Washington Generals. The official score didn’t really matter and in the end, the spectators were treated to some good old fashioned hockey and and opportunity to get autographs from their NHL heroes. There were many happy kids with signed pucks, hockey cards and framed photos.
As it was also my birthday that night, I was given a celebratory shootout. Unfortunately, I missed on the first attempt but made good on a 2nd unofficial shot.
GOAL! For my part, I was simply grateful to be part of the first annual charity hockey game for North End children & youth.
The North End Hockey Program is a partnership between Ndinawemaaganag Endaawaad (Ndinawe), Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre (Ma Mawi), North End Community Renewal Corporation (NECRC), Winnipeg Police Service (Division 13 – Community Support Unit) and the Winnipeg Police Patrolmen Hockey Club who are working together to make hockey a reality for North End children/youth and their families. The positive impacts are endless not only for the North End but other communities in Winnipeg through a shared love of hockey.
