Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice

Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice

It’s pumpkin season! The weather in Winnipeg has been simply amazing and its the middle of October. All across Manitoba, there’s no shortage of pumpkins and gourds at supermarkets, pumpkin patches and farmer’s markets. The pumpkin spiced lattes are now available at Starbucks and more coffee retailers are offering the seasonal favourite until Halloween.

It’s harvest time and the gourds are everywhere! In early October, we took a drive out to Roland, Manitoba for the Roland Pumpkin Festival to check out this year’s set of monster pumpkins. The winning pumpkin at this year’s festival weighed in at over 1,297lbs. Do you know how many pumpkin pies you could bake, or how many Pumpkin Spiced Lattes at Starbucks? Lots.

Closer to Winnipeg, the stalls at the St. Norbert’s Farmer’s Market are overflowing with gourds – pumpkins for carving and decorations and squash varieties for pinakbet and soups. Check out the monster squash in my photos.

On the north side of Winnipeg, up on Henderson Hwy just past the Perimeter Hwy is Schwabe Pumpkins. It’s a great little pumpkin patch with hay bale characters and great for family photos. Gourds of all varieties and all sizes are available for everyone to pick through. I even picked up a pumpkin toque as I checked out with several pumpkins for an upcoming carving project.

Lots of fun to be had in the pumpkin patch. Happy Halloween and if you see the Great Pumpkin, take a selfie.
