Manitoba imposes tougher sanctions on distracted

Distracted drivers in Manitoba will face tougher sanctions starting next month.

The increased fines take effect on November 1.in accordance with the new legislation introduced in the Manitoba Legislature earlier this year. Distracted drivers include those caught with a cellphone behind the wheel, carrying a handheld electronic device, texting while driving, and having a bite to eat. The fine has been increased threefold from $203 to $672.In addition, distracted drivers will face a mandatory three-day suspension and will be subjected to an additional seven-day ban if they break the law again within a 10-year period. Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler said the yearly increase in distracted driving accidents prompted the government to enact higher penalties. Drivers must pay $50 to the Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) to retrieve their license.

Further driving suspension is possible depending on their driving history.
