Some 12,000 families living in the danger zone around Mayon Volcano may be included in mandatory evacuation efforts, after state volcanologists raised the alert level there to “3” Monday night.

Albay Governor Jose Salceda also said evacuation centers have been readied in Legazpi City and Santo Domingo towns.

On Monday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level at Mayon to “3” after noting increased activity there which means Mayon “is exhibiting relatively high unrest and that magma is at the crater and that hazardous eruption is possible within weeks.”

A compulsory or assisted evacuation will be implemented in the 6- to 8-km extended danger zone or buffer zone, Salceda said.
