Former beauty queen Miriam Quiambao says she has nothing against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and extended her apology through Twitter for her statements that may have offended them.
However it seems that the Twitter apology is not enough for LADLAD, the political party of LGBT who wants instead a public apology from Miriam.
The 1999 Miss Universe first runner-up earned the ire of Twitter users when she posted her opinion about homosexuals saying, “Homosexuality is not a sin but it is a lie from the devil. Do not be deceived. God loves gays and wants them to know the truth,” followed by another post that read, “No offense to the LGBT but the TRuth is the Truth that comes from God. Take it or leave it. We will all face the judgement seat of God.”
Enraged netizens called Miriam names and even posted unsavory words to express their anger. For Bemz Benedicto, National Chairperson of Ang LADLAD and a transgender, Miriam’s Twitter posts were uncalled for.
Meanwhile, UP Diliman Asst. Professor Danilo Arao advised users of social networking sites to be sensitive in posting opinions. He said people should be gender-sensitive especially to the LGBT community.
Currently there is no Code of Ethics for social networking sites, but the so-called Bloggers of Cyberjournalists of the Philippines has their own set of Code of Ethics.
