Members of several communities gathered at FILCASA on Saturday, October 26, 2013 to celebrate Manitoba’s Seniors Month. In this year celebration the participants learned more than just cultural dances and Pilipino food, for the topic of this year Knights of Rizal Winnipeg Chapter‘s (KoR-W) organized event was Seniors Oral Health.
Drs. Hai-Santiago and Colina presented a seminar on oral health. The connections between oral health and general health and vice versa were explored. A review of how certain chronic illnesses such as osteoporosis, cancer therapy, stroke and multiple sclerosis affect the health of the mouth was presented. The presenters stressed that “Prevention is the Key”. The presentation discussed the importance of practicing basic oral and denture care in preventing oral conditions that can deleteriously affect the general health of seniors. Specific techniques and recommendations were covered. To address seniors concerns related to access to dental care, the seminar concluded with an overview of clinics and other resources that are available in Winnipeg.
The day saw sharing of cultures with the participants, the obvious appreciation of Shanlee Spence’s performance of the Aboriginal Hoop Dance garnered vocal appreciation from the audience at every turn, she was the pride of the aboriginal community whose members were present during the event. The audience was equally entertained by the FILCASA Dancers, Mr. Dave Schellenberg (Chairperson of Manitoba Council on Aging) stated that he was impressed at their country western line dancing from a group of dancers he did not expect to exist in the Pilipino community. The Seniors and the Knights of Rizal is looking forward to Sir John Gano’s Seniors Wellness Committee’s 2014 program.
