Kevin Lamoureux wins Winnipeg North Federal By-election

Promises to make a difference in the House of Commons

After 18 years at the Mantioba Legislature, long time Inkster MLA, Kevin Lamoureux won the battle of the Kevins in the Winnipeg North Byelection by defeating NDP candidate Kevin Chief. Filipina candidate, Julie Javier, the acting executive director of the Philippine Canadian Centre finished in third place.

In his election night victory speech at the Punjab Banquet Hall on Mandalay Drive, Lamoureux said, “I thank you from the bottom of my heart for trusting us and giving us this second seat in Winnipeg. I promise to make a difference.”

From MLA to MP, the journey has just begun. Lamoureux is the second Liberal from Manitoba and now joins Winnipeg South Centre MP, Anita Neville in the House of Commons.

The Liberals pulled off the surprising win as Winnipeg North was a NDP stronghold for the last 13 years with former NDP MP Judy Wasylecia-Leis and a third place showing by the Liberals in the last federal election.

Official results from Elections canada: Kevin Lamoureux (Liberal) 7,303 (46.3%); Kevin Chief (NDP) 6,490 (41.2) and Julie Javier (Conservative) 1,647 (10.4%). Total number of ballots cast 15,765. Voter turnout was at 30.8%.
