The Montreal Canadiens scored twice in the first period and Carey Price turned away all 35 shots beating the Winnipeg Jets 3-0 at the MTS Centre. Brandon Prust and P.K. Subban scored for the Canadiens in the first period who improved to 4-2-0. The Jets fresh off their 3-0 win over the New Jersey Devils fell to 3-4-0.
Coach Claude Noel was looking for another complete 60 minute performance from his squad but found them behind early in the game. Brandon Prust opened the scoring capitalizing on a rebound off the end boards at the 2:06 mark.
The Canadiens kept the pressure on the Jets throughout the first and took a 2-0 lead at 11:28 of the first. Reigning Norris trophy winner P.K. Subban showed off his shot firing a laser from the point, beating Ondrej Pavelec.
Daniel Briere sealed Montreal’s victory with an empty netter.
The Canadiens controlled the puck possession in the first period and Carey Price wasn’t tested which drowned out any chances of the Jets generating any offense.
“We didn’t have a lot of great chances in the game,” coach Claude Noel said. “He[Price] saw a lot of pucks, he was able to stop it quickly, just clear shots to the net.”
Defenseman Zach Bogosian thought that the effort was there but couldn’t overcome the slow start.
“We played hard relatively for the rest of the game but it’s tough when you give up a couple goals in the first period,” Bogosian said.
The Winnipeg Jets will next face the St. Louis Blues on Friday night at the MTS Centre.
