(May 21, PCCM grounds)
The past years have been exciting for band-music enthusiasts in Winnipeg. The city has already hosted a stream of Philippines-based bands that included Slapshock, Pupil, True Faith, Ely Buendia & His Band, and MYMP. In fact, Parokya ni Edgar had just jampacked Garrick Centre a month ago; and Siakol and Grin Department are about to rock the stage of Essence Event Centre next month. But, hey, summer fun is not yet over! We still have Sponge Cola to watch out for, end of May; and then the premier Rock band of the Philippines, The Dawn is set to rise this August.
In the meantime, prepare yourselves for a sparkle of Sponge Cola. The dashing quartet is set to shower the open-air parking grounds of Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (737 Keewatin St.) with sunny, summery Alternative Rock music on May 21.
Formed in 1998, Sponge Cola currently consists of Yael Yuzon (vocals, guitar), Gosh Dilay (bass, vocals), Armo Armovit (lead guitar), and Ted Mark Cruz (drums). In its nearly two decades of activity, the band has released five studio albums, from 2004’s Palabas to 2014’s Ultrablessed, spawning a string of singles that include “Jeepney,” “Bitiw,” “Tambay,” “Kay Tagal Kitang Hinintay,” “Tuliro,” “Di Na Mababawi,” and “Move On.”
Brought by Vocal Arts Production, the Winnipeg show of Sponge Cola is part of the band’s 2017 North American Jeepney Tour. For tickets and inquiry, contact Paige Dimayuga at 204-330-3010.
