Teaching Sobeys customers how to cook Filipino food at home
There’s at least one place you can find Filipino food in the south end of Winnipeg. At the Sobeys Extra on Pembina Hwy in Fort Richmond, in-store Chef Mark Sobrevinas can be found behind the large island teaching a cooking class. Last month’s classed included cooking Filipino food and as the fall season is here, October will be filled with fall-inspired cooking classes.
In last month’s Community Room cooking classes, Chef Mark spent two hours teaching curious students how to make lumpia, pancit and chicken adobo. As the in-store chef, he’s at the forefront of putting together fun and creative cooking classes for residents in the area. The classes are absolutely free and to register, it’s easy as calling their customer service line and book a spot. Classes are offered to adults and kids.
In his Filipino cooking class, participants took turns rolling and wrapping lumpia and took notes on cooking chicken adobo and preparing variations of pancit including a vegetarian version of pancit.
Chef Mark started his cooking career as a graduate from Red River College and has over 18 years of experience. His culinary inspiration comes from his late father, Crisanto “Sonny” Sobrevinas. Mark has worked at many restuarants over his 18 year career including The Gates on Roblin, 529 Wellington, and Segovia Tapas Bar. In recent times, Chef Mark has been working behind the scenes in the kitchens with Chef Allan Pineda’s BAON Nights, Jeremy Senaris’ upcoming LASA pop-up dinner series and personal catering events with fruit platters.
His current role at Sobeys Extra on Pembina is an exciting position as he has an entire grocery store as his pantry. Working at Sobey Extra allows him to teach people different cooking techniques and styles especially how to create restaurant quality food.
If you want to learn more about Chef Mark and take part in the classes offered at Sobey Extra on Pembina every month, visit him and the Community Room. In addition to Chef Mark, classes in the Community Room are lead by several Sobeys Extra staff including an in-store dietician, well-being counsellor and community room coordinator.
