Sen. Tobias Enverga of Ontario has died at age 61.

Enverga’s office said he died Thursday morning with his wife by his side. The Conservative senator was attending the ParlAmericas Annual Plenary Assembly in Colombia along with Liberal MPs Robert Nault and Randy Boissonnault, NDP MP Richard Cannings and Conservative MP Bev Shipley.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted condolences, calling Enverga a dedicated senator, a strong voice for the Filipino community, and a friend to so many on the Hill.

Enverga’s colleagues in the Senate including Speaker of the Senate George Furey, leader of the Conservative Senate Sen. Larry Smith, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, and former Conservative interim leader Rona Ambrose extended condolences to Enverga’s wife, Rosemer, and three daughters Thursday afternoon

The Philippine-born Enverga is the first Filipino-Canadian to sit in the Senate. He served as a school trustee for the Toronto Catholic District School Board and was later elected in the City of Toronto. His advocacy includes promoting support for people who have Down syndrome, like one of his daughters.
