Filipino indie films join Tokyo filmfest

Local independent films are joining different sections at the 29th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) slated on Oct. 25 to Nov. 3 this year.

These are “Die Beautiful” of director Jun Lana participating in the Competition/World Premiere section; Ivan Andrew Payawal’s “I America” and Mikhail Red’s “Birdshot” in the Asian Future section; “Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis,” the eight-hour historical film of Lav Diaz, in the World Focus section; and Brillante Mendoza’s “Shiniuma (Dead Horse)” in the Asian Three-Fold Mirror 2016: Reflections section. Meanwhile, at the All Lights India International Film Festival (ALIIFF) 2016 actress Lotlot de Leon was awarded Special Acting Citation for her role in Dexter Hemedez and Allan Ibañez “1st Term.”

Also recognized was director Louie Ignacio’s “Laut” which got the Honorable Mention in the International Competition for Feature Films section of the same festival.
