Filipino films make it to Cannes

Six films Filipino filmmakers made it to the Short Film Corner category of the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival slated on May 11-22 in Cannes, France.

Christian Lat’s “Séjour,” is about a man trying to cope with the loss of a loved one with the help of a woman he met in a red-light district. Emil Ray Alviz’s “Maria,” revolves around a nun stuck in a situation, which she needs to decide on before the sun rises. Allison Barretto’s “Re-,” is about an introverted college student who is still mourning the loss of his friend a year after her death. Rod-Michael Tumbaga’s “Neon,” is about a frustrated mini-mart employee who does his best to understand the huge number of customers he encounters. Khalil Joseph Bañares’ “Hail The Queen,” is about a Filipina who pursues her dream of being the first Filipina pornstar to be signed by a major porn label. Thop Nazareno’s “Lope,” is a dialogue between a young boy and his grandmother as he demands Tinola (chicken stew) for breakfast.

The Cannes Short Film was created in 2011. At the end of the competition, the short films Jury awards a Palme d’or at the Short Film Corner, a professional area for meeting people, exchanging ideas and promoting films.
