Filipino-American Paul Qui prepared a clam dashi broth and coconut ice cream with Thai chili foam during the final cook-off against Sarah Gruenberg of Chicago at the Black & Blue restaurant in Vancouver, British Columbia, to bag the “Top Chef: Texas,” season 9 of the US-aired reality show .
The 31-year-old Qui, executive chef of Uchiko Restaurant in Austin, Texas won $125,000 for his feat.
Qui said he was extremely happy to see her parents watched him won the championship. He is scheduled to return for a reunion episode of the biggest season yet for “Top Chef.,” which clocks in an average of more than one to two million viewers per season in the US alone.
Other Fil-Ams who tried to win the title include Sally Camacho of Los Angeles who placed runner-up to Chris Hanmer of Las Vegas in 2011’s second season of “Top Chef: Just Desserts.” The Bravo and Food Network reality show is aired over Solar cable channels in Manila.
