Filipino-American actors Daphne Joy and Michael Rosales are among the cast of the latest Johnny Depp starrer’ “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”
Daphne Joy, who plays the role of a mermaid in the movie, was born and raised in Olongapo City, Philippines. She was introduced to American way of life when her family relocated to Los Angeles when she was 8 years old. She quickly became interested in entertainment, first dabbling in dance groups, choir, cheerleading and talent shows. She shifted her interests to acting at the age of 18 and was soon featured in several recording artists’ music videos, commercials, national print campaigns, magazine covers and features.
Michael Ilano Rosales was chosen to play a “pirate from the Philippines” from a pool of over 4,000 aspirants.
The Hawaii-based Rosales is a multicultural actor/rap artist/performer. His first full-length album, “Respect My Pride,” was released in 2008. The album features English and Filipino language music that inspires an appreciation of the Filipino culture and heritage.
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,’ opens in Philippine movie houses on May 2011.
