Fifteen young students and a group receive 2017 Youth Role Model Awards

Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros Award for Courage as one of the awards

Fifteen young students and a group of students from the different schools in the city received the annual City of Winnipeg’s Citizen Equity Committee’s 2017 Youth Role Model Awards held recently at Norwood Hotel.

In his message, Mayor Brian Bowman says: “The Citizen Equity CommitteeYouth Role MOdel wards celebrate culture, diversity and recognize youth in Winnipeg who demonstrate outstanding achievements.” and he added, “Their creative and sporting talents, volunteer efforts and contributions are part of the fabric of our community and we are all better for having them in our lives.”

Councillor Cindy Gilroy, chairperson, City of Winnipeg’s Citizen Equity Committee, in her message, writes: “The City of Winnipeg’s Citizen Equity Committee recognizes the accomplishments of the youth from diverse communities. It’s my pleasure to participate in the 2017 Youth Role Model Awards ceremony with our respective youths and their families. All the youths who have been nominated for this year awards have shown the outstanding achievements.”

Two of the Youth Role Model Awards are named to honor former members of the CEC who had been involved in the committee, namely, Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros Award for Courage; and Wade “Kojo” Williams Sr. Award for Action Against Racism and Discrimination. Ron Cantiveros, one of the sons of Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros; and Deserie Richard, sister of Wade, delivered the highlights of the volunteerism of the two late members of CEC.

Greetings were delivered by Chief Francine Meeches, Swan Lake First Nation, Treaty No. 1; William Gordon, Manitoba Metis Federation; and Councillor Brian Mayes, Councillor for Youth; and the main address of Councillor Cindy Gilroy.

The folowing awardees include Rachel Beazley, Junior; and Paige Gillingham, senior, Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros Award for Courage; Palvi Saini, junior; and Diversity Committee-Vincent Massey Collegiate, senior; Wade “Kojo” Williams Sr. for Action Against Racism and Discrimination; Ernestine Mousseau,junior; Donovan Sutherland, senior, Spirituality Award; Emily Turner-Martens,junior; Devon Liscum, senior, Advocacy Award; Community Volunteering award went to Alon Golubchik, junior and Dakota Woitowicz,senior; Education and Training Award, Himamshu Sharma, junior and Travis Loest, senior; Justine Carriere, junior and Maryo John, senior, Sports Award; Nola Branconnier-Wilson, junior and Aser Hailu, senior, Performance/Arts awardees.

Citizen Equity Committee is composed of Councillor Cindy Gilroy, chair; Councillor John Schreyer, Maria Morrison, Michael Jack, Alison Moist, Antonio Buccini, Julie Javier, Immaculate Nabisere, Adeline Bird, Manoj Nowrang, Bonnie Thompson, Sylvia Todaschuk, and Tony Antonio.
