Ethnica: A Taste of Filipino-Canadian Popcore Music

By Alfie Vera Mella

Formed in November 2013, Ethnica is comprised by Kevin Ilano on bass, Joseph David on drums, Vivienne Cuzon on vocals, and Chris Pangan on guitars. Their musical influences include Paramore, Trivium, Periphery, Dream Theatre, Jamiroquai, Evanescence, and Avril Lavigne. From day one, one of their primary goals is to write their own songs. So far, some of these labors of love and passion for music include “Feel the Thorns,” “Redemption,” “Fading Dreams,” “Rivers,” and “Shattered,” which they hoped to release as part of a studio-recorded album. They have already drive-tested their music at several live performances at venues like The Zoo Night Club and Ozzys Night Club in Osborne Village and Charlee’s Lounge (185 Stadacona St.). Really up on their feet, Ethnica has a busy schedule this summer. To those who want to sample a brand of Filipino Canadian Emo/Popcore music, you might want to check out Ethnica at any of their upcoming shows: Rookie’s Sports Bar (March 29), Canton Food Gallery (April 26), The Grave (May 10), The Zoo Night Club (May 24), The Zoo Night Club (June 21), and Metalpalooza Festival–North Hill Inn, in Brandon, Manitoba (June 28).
