A Philippines National Hero was honoured by naming a park after Dr. Jose Rizal in Winnipeg during Philippine Heritage celebrations in June. Led by the Knights of Rizal Winnipeg Chapter (KoR-W) and the Rizal Memorial Committee, members of the Filipino community gathered to celebrate a symbol of Philippine history.
A memorial stone with Dr. Jose Rizal’s portrait includes an inscription from Noli Me Tangere: “I die with seeing dawn’s light shining on my country. You who will see it, welcome it for me. Don’t forget those who fell during the night time.”
Dr. Jose Rizal Park is located on Sewa Cresent in the Inkster Garden neighbourhood in Winnipeg. Expect many community celebrations to be held at Dr. Jose Rizal Park for many years to come.
