MANILA, Philippines – Government sources confirmed that President Benigno Aquino III has accepted the resignation of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Alan Purisima.
It is said that the President is to announce his decision, through a televised speech this Friday evening.
Early reports regarding the besieged PNP chief’s resignation was denied by both the Palace and Purisima’s camp.
The news came in the midst of calls that Aquino and Purisima be held accountable for the so-called “misencounter” in Mamasapano town, Maguindanao which resulted in the death of 44 PNP-Special Action Force (SAF) members.
Regardless of his suspension, Purisima reportedly directed the operation to get international terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, with the backing of the President.
Purisima was suspended last year by the office of the Ombudsman for his participation in an anomalous contract under the PNP.
