Thursday night (Friday morning in Manila) was a sad day for Filipino fans of Thia Megia as the Filipino-American contender on this year’s “American Idol,” got eliminated for getting the least number of votes from the show’s followers.
The voters agreed in the opinion of AI judge Randy Jackson that there were a couple of pitch issues when Megia played it too “safe” when she sang the karaoke favorite “Daniel,” for the episode’s Elton John theme.
The other judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez considered her performance up to par.
Megia was born in Hayward, California to Filipino parents Cynthia and Loreto Megia who were originally from Angeles, Pampanga.
Prior to her “AI” stint, Megia was best known for her appearance on the fourth season of “America’s Got Talent” in 2009, where she made it as far as the quarterfinals. She was also one of the promising singers who performed at the “David Foster and Friends” concert tour in California which featured Charice Pempengco.
As a 16-year-old crooner, Megia is the youngest contestant ever to make it to the show’s top 13.
Fellow Filipino-American Clint Jun Gamboa, a karaoke joint host was also eliminated from the show early March.
