The annual ice fishing fundraiser extravaganza took place on January 7 on the Red River just north of Selkirk. What was initially a more serious competitive derby event has evolved today into more of a family festival type of atmosphere. This year’s event drew a record 1890 competitors with 650 of that being kids. Add in the over 100 dedicated volunteers and you have 2000 people who were on the ice at KidFish! As a member of the fantastic organizing committee, I would like to personally thank all of our kababayans who came out that day in support. Filipinos were very well represented all over the derby site from the volunteer crew, fish brought in to the prize tent, and taking part in the festivities. All in all the derby raised just over $57,000 in support of Cancer Care Manitoba and the Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg!!
Notes: Brought to you in part by the Filipino Angler’s Association of Manitoba is a seminar on Humminbird Autochart Live by Darrin Bohonis. If you have one of these units on your boat or are looking to get one, then this is a must attend free event. February 8th, 6:30pm at Cabela’s…. Join the Filipino Angler’s Association of Manitoba today! $30/family for the year. Online competitions and ice fishing excursion plans starting soon. Contact Eric at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info…. Lake Winnipeg continues to be blazing hot for the greenbacks through the ice. Access points at Pruden’s Creek, Rd 103, and Grand Beach on the east side are good to go. Balsam Bay will be getting work done so another access point at Beaconia has been opened up. Chalet Beach Rd and Warner Rd. on the west side are also good to use as well as of this writing. Target shallower water around 7′-11′ under the ice as the bait fish have been stacked in there all winter thus far and the walleyes have been gorging.
