Glaiza de Castro and The Cult of Julia Robert (Julia Clarette and The Youth’s Robert Javier) each rendered an energetic and ecstatic set of electrifying music, both originals and covers. They were backed up by the equally talented group of local Winnipeg sessionist musicians consisting of Kervy Quitane (guitar) ang Michael Borja (bass) of Lykosa and Christine Mazur (violin/cello), Gail Ignacio (drums), Michael Mostajo (percussion), and aLfie vera mella (percussion) of haLf man haLf eLf. De Castro performed songs from her third studio album, Synthesis, which included “Barcelona,” “Country Tree,” and “Dusk ’til Dawn”; as well as a cover of The Dawn’s “Salamat” and Lorde’s “Royals.” The Cult of Julia Robert, for their part, unleashed original songs like “Fooling Around,” “Ripe for Picking,” and “Larga de Dia”; as well as a medley that included snippets of Eraserheads’ “Ligaya,” Alamid’s “Your Love,” VST & Co.’s “Ipagpatawad Mo,” and South Border’s “Kahit Kailan.” The two opening acts did their share by providing superb appetizers: haLf man haLf eLf, performing their trademark original song “My Brilliant Friend” and an ornate version of Eraserheads’ “Ang Huling El Bimbo”; and The 12/21, covering a Ramones song and playing an original composition entitled “Larawan.” The well-organized concert was another event by DMC Production.
