Gerrard demands NDP ensure affordable housing for new Canadians and students

Over 15,000 new Canadians arrived in Manitoba last year, still no plan to house them

WINNIPEG – Today, Manitoba Liberal leader Jon Gerrard called on the NDP to end their neglect of new Canadians and students. With new Canadians and students needing affordable housing in Manitoba, over 15,000 new Canadians came to Manitoba last year and there is vacancy rate of only .9 percent. The NDP have known for 12 years that they have needed to ensure adequate affordable housing, and they’ve failed to do their job.

“New Canadians and students are desperate for affordable housing and this government have done very little to address the need,” says Manitoba Liberal leader Jon Gerrard. “In order to provide affordable housing options for students and new Canadians, the government must enact a housing strategy now.”

According to figures from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the rental vacancy rate in Winnipeg is .9 percent. In Brandon it’s a staggering .2 per cent.

“The NDP has been derelict in their duty of protecting the most vulnerable in Manitoba,” says Gerrard.
