DILG and PNP Collaborate to Prevent Abuse in Enforcing Mask Rule

Amidst the recent surges of COVID-19 cases, President Duterte has given orders to the police to go ahead and arrest citizens who are not wearing their masks properly.

As such directive is prone to abuse during enforcement, the Department of Interior and Local Government is currently working with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and local government to prevent such scenarios from happening.

In his interview, DILG Undersecretary and spokesperson Jonathan Malaya acknowledged that abuses of this directive is indeed possible; hence the need for PNP and the local government to collaborate in order to set guidelines that will curb abuse of police authority.

The action plan is for DILG to meet with PNP, followed by a coordination with LGUs to discuss their varying penalties. Revealing that the President was serious with this directive, Malaya said they will all meet at the soonest possible time to determine the parameters of the directive that he gave.
